Chapter Five

“No fucking way!” I yelled at Dr. Wing in the UNCCC Paris office. “There is no way I’m going to wait another six months for a vacation; the only thing you people ever think about is work. I’ve got to have some time off.”

This wasn’t the way I had planned to ask, but this was how it was turning out. Dr. Wing looked at me with dark, narrowed eyes and slowly got up from his chair. He walked around the desk and stood in front of me.

“You will never,” he said in a voice cold enough to freeze vodka, “never, ever use that tone of voice in this office.

“You may be a good agent, but I will not accept such ranting from a man who works with this Commission. Now, why don’t you want to go back to work?”

His tone had cooled me down and I realized the axe could fall at any second; it’s really not a smart thing to yell at the director of UNCCC. Wing is known for two things: his razor-sharp mind and his penchant for sending out-of-favor agents to Greenland, Africa and other duty points famous for their sheer hellishness. I could see myself pulling a two-year hitch in the middle of the Congo if I didn’t play it right. I looked at him and began again in a low and respectful voice.

“Well…” I replied, a hint of crow in my tone, “this last case really put my head through some rough things.

“If it’s possible, I would like to take some time off and get back into shape. As long as my mind is messed up, there’s a chance that I might blow a job and I don’t want to risk being the ruin of a case.”

I gave him a humble, “all-for-the-Commission” look and waited.

“Weak—all you new people are weak. I once spent two years on a case and never stopped to sleep. I know you worked hard on your last case, but nothing was really resolved. Granted, all roads pointed to Cordova, but there’s no way we will ever be sure. Your job is to solve crimes, not to get wrapped up with people. If you can’t take the pressure, maybe you should find a less taxing occupation.”

It was very cold inside my gut and the idea of cashing out didn’t make things any better. I had walked into Wing’s office like the hottest thing since James Bond and had the hell shot right out from under me. Sometimes I’m not very smart, and this was one of those low-IQ days. I tensed up for a real ass-chewing and hoped I’d still be with the Com-mission when Wing was done.

“Gold, I’m not going to listen to any more of this sobbing. You will pick up the Munich case and you will find out where those drugs are coming from. If need be, you will cross over into the East Sector to find out. You are to be in Munich no later than 12:00 hours on the 22nd of this month.
